IP Performance Plus Probe
IP Performance Plus Probe provides detailed quality of service monitoring for TCP/IP transmission paths for Network Operators, Internet Service Providers and users of IP transport services for service management purposes. It supports dynamic IP addresses, NAT/PAT, IP TOS and different traffic classes in MPLS networks.
The Internet is the de-facto general purpose distribution channel for all kind of information. Apart from mail, file sharing and web access, it's relevance for multimedia applications (telephony, radio, music, video on demand and TV) increases. IP is going to replace all other network technologies. Since mission critical applications are using IP, KPI monitoring of IP infrastructure becomes more important. Cooperation between telco suppliers and customers is SLA based. Suppliers need to prove SLA conformance and customers want to verify the quality delivered.
IP Performance Plus Probe is designed for this purpose. It measures important IP KPIs like packet round trip times, one way packet delay, jitter, packet loss, out of sequence packets and IP bandwidth. It supports dynamic IP address assignment, NAT/PAT, IP TOS and is well suited to measure performance parameters of access links (e.g. DSL, cable networks and also UMTS). For MPLS networks it supports measurement of different traffic classes based on traffic flows.
Throughput, jitter, loss and one way packet delay are measured separately for up- and downstream and a security feature protects the server service against abuse.
The use case below depicts the IP upstream measurement in DSL access networks.

IP Performance Plus Probe integrates with HP SiteScope and SLA Control. It measures IP end-to-end quality parameters in real time by periodically transmitting data streams.
Probe configuration and scheduling are steered by the individual SQM. SLO violations are determined online and can trigger alarms. Collected performance data can be reported to SQM systems for aggregated SLA conformance reporting.

Features
- IP packet round trip times on IP/UDP level with configurable packet size, repetitions, timing, TOS and traffic flows. Resulting metrics include minimum, maximum, average, median, 95 percent and 98 percent quantiles of IP/UDP RTT
- Bandwidth measurement separately for up- and downstream. Reported metrics include gross and net rates. The gross rate includes overhead calculation for UDP, IP and Ethernet
- Packet loss and out of sequence packets as percentage of total packet count
- Jitter separately for up- and downstream. Jitter metrics include RFC 3550 jitter, maximum jitter and percentage of packets exceeding a predefined threshold value
- One way packet delay separately for up- and downstream with configurable packet size, repetitions, timing, TOS and traffic flows. Resulting metrics include minimum, maximum, average, median, 10 percent and 99,5 percent quantiles of IP/UDP one way packet delay
